In October of 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis ended in a blaze of radioactive fire from coast to coast. In the aftermath of the apocalypse, it wasn’t just the bugs that got bigger. People’s desperate nostalgia for kitschy, crumbling Americana blew up like an atom bomb. Inhabitants of the new America longed for what was exciting, vibrant, familiar, and most importantly, things that reminded them of home.

America is now a wacky world of mutated creatures, cryptids, monsters, go-go girls, surfers, cowboys and aliens. While Uncle Sam may not be what he was before the bombs, he’s certainly still got his spirit. You never know what you might find just around the bend, but you can be sure it will always have a healthy dose of over-the-top, larger than life American personality.

The year is now 1966, the year of the Mother Road. American sentimentality has the resilience of a cockroach, and Route 66 beckons. Miraculously, Route 66 remained largely intact after the bombing, and many took that as a sign from God that he couldn’t let all of the old America go up in flames. What better way to harken back to simpler times, brighter times, than exploring what’s left along the lifeline from Chicago to L.A.?

In this game, you will be playing a caravan of travelers on a pilgrimage along the Mother Road. While each of you has your own reasons for why you are making the trek and what you hope to find along the way, you have chosen to band together for one reason or another as you make the voyage. While the eventual goal is to reach the end of the route, no road trip is truly worthwhile or memorable without its many unexpected diversions and side quests. The more stops you add along the way, the more you keep the spirit of the American road trip alive. It’s like they say, it is about the journey, not the destination.
